It took me a long time to accept that I have sensitive skin. But considering how quick my skin was to react to environmental changes (hello, rosacea!) or actives in skincare, there came a point where I could no longer live in denial. “The classification of ‘sensitive skin’ refers to skin that is more reactive to changes—hormonal, products, dietary, environmental, and lifestyle. Reactions can include temporary stinging, burning and discomfort, as well as redness, irritation, inflammation, and [a] rash [or] eczema,” explains Dr. Deanne Mraz, a board-certified dermatologist and the president and co-founder of Modern Dermatology in Westport, CT. If that sounds like you, one way to prevent untimely skin reactions is to stock your routine with the best makeup products for sensitive skin.
In general, there are some particularly irritating ingredients that you should try to avoid, like fragrances, essential oils, and alcohols. On the flipside, there are a few ingredients that might even be beneficial to your skin and help calm it down. “Since sensitive skin may lack hydration and have disrupted skin barrier function, one should look for products that rehydrate and restore the skin like ceramides. Other moisturizing ingredients include niacinamide and hyaluronic acid. Someone with sensitive skin who is not acne prone, I do recommend using more hydrating ingredients like dimethicone,” says Dr. Kseniya Kobets, a board-certified dermatologist and the director of cosmetic dermatology at Montefiore Advanced Care in Elmsford, NY. At the end of the day, though, it all depends on how your skin reacts to a certain formula—not all people with sensitive skin will have the same triggers. That’s why it’s important to test products before applying them and keeping them on your face all day.
Through trial and error, I’ve discovered a bevy of foundations, blushes, lipsticks, and other products that enhance my features without aggravating my skin. With the help of other ELLE editors, dermatologists, and celebrity makeup artist Tobi Henney, I’ve created this master list of the 13 best makeup products for sensitive skin.
