It's all about menswear this season, especially when it comes to cozy boyfriend sweaters and grandpa cardigans. There's just something so comforting and nostalgic about wearing snuggly "borrowed from the boys" knitwear styles (even if in reality, they're owned by us and purchased from the womenswear department!) Maybe it has something to do with those familiar faces—and wardrobes—that we grew up with on TV. From Mr. Rogers to Dr. Huxtable, guys on television rocked some seriously good knitwear... so good, in fact, that it still inspires our winter wardrobes today. Take a look at these TV sweater icons to see why.

Dr. Heathcliff Huxtable, The Cosby Show

We must start this list with probably the most famous television dad—and knitwear icon—in the world Bill Cosby, or as he was known to millions of The Cosby Show viewers, Dr. Heathcliff “Cliff” Huxtable. Dr. H. had the BEST European-made sweater collection in Brooklyn Heights, if not all of New York City—techno-color intarsia, mismatched patchwork embellishments, natty jacquards and the most unexpected graphics ever, like runners. And combs. Combs.

Mr. Rogers, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood

We’re not sure what was more reassuring: the dulcet tones of Mr. Rogers singing “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” or his dependable ritual of changing into his at-home skater kicks and snuggly, zip-up cable-knit cardigan the beginning of each Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood episode.

Carlton Banks, Fresh Prince of Bel Air

While preppy, prissy Bel-Air-raised Carlton loved himself some pastel cable-knit sweaters, we can’t remember if he actually wore the sweaters. As opposed to tying the knits loosely over his shoulders Ivy League style, like a layering piece or a cape, if you will. But then again double layers might be too restricting to spontaneously break out into his Carlton dance moves. (If the show still aired today, fashion-obsessed sis Hilary would totally love the Carven-ness of Carlton’s pastel collection.)

Bert and Ernie, Sesame Street

Hey, Muppets count as TV sweater stars, too—especially roomies-slash-BFFs Bert and Ernie. What other set of wing-men could get away with always wearing coordinated hipster-striped sweaters like these two? If Bert and Ernie ever traded up and out of their basement digs at 123 Sesame Street, we suggest they look at one of the fancy new condos in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Ross Geller, Friends

Just to clarify, we never actually saw Ross wear his infamous red sweater. Nevertheless, the knit piece did enjoy a lot of screen time as the gang spent the entire episode trying to find the crimson crewneck’s owner a.k.a. the father of Rachel’s baby. And side note: if we ever created a leather pants icon list, Ross would so be tops for that one. “It’s like a paste!”

While technically a new show, the comedy The Goldbergs continues to mine all that’s fun about ‘80s nostalgia, including crazy, colorful, oversize knits. Especially ones the entire family can wear. New millennial sweater icon?
