To top sheet or not to top sheet, that is the question at hand. Regardless of your personal sheeting preference, having the best luxury duvet cover possible is in your best interest. Whether you choose to use the extra layer between your body and the comforter is, well, between you and your comforter; I’ll stay out of it. But what I won’t allow is a raggedy, crappy coverlet—or worse, no duvet cover at all.

To find out more about high-end covers and frankly, what their purpose is, I talked to Paula Cossarini, product design manager at Article. The furniture brand recently launched its debut bedding line, so the subject is fresh on Cossarini’s mind. “I always recommend using a duvet cover with your insert,” she says. “A duvet cover adds an extra layer of comfort, protects your duvet insert from getting dirty, and can be easily removed to wash.” Parents, pet owners, and in-bed snackers, take note. Plus, Cossarini notes that an interchangeable cover offers a simple way to revamp the look of your bedroom, like a paint-free makeover.

Bear in mind that certain types of covers might not suit your sleeping style. “Consider what type of sleeper you are and select your duvet cover material with that in mind,” Cossarini says. “A linen cover is a great choice for hot sleepers or humid climates, as the fibers don’t retain moisture as long.” (And might I suggest you pair that linen cover with some cooling percale sheets?) If you want something cozier and prefer warm bedding like flannel sheets, she recommends cotton. Overall, Cossarini says that natural materials are better for everyone as they are breathable and lightweight. One final note before I send you off to shop: An untethered duvet will shift and move inside of a cover, so styles that offer inner ties tend to be a better choice than those without. Now, scroll on for the 24 best luxury duvet covers to cuddle up with tonight, including some of the best bedding on Amazon.
