10 Impossibly Chic Suede Coats to Wear on Repeat This Season

The timeless jacket is having a moment in the spotlight again.

By

The time has come to swap your trusty suede blazer for a more substantial suede coat. This season, the quintessential cold-weather silhouette is back and better than ever. From Alexa Chung and Madewell’s sweeping chocolate brown trench to Ralph Lauren’s plush fall 2024 shearling styles, so many brands and designers are once again proving the suede coat’s staying power.

“Suede coats are undoubtedly one of the season’s hottest items,” says The RealReal Site Editor Shelby Comroe, who notes that searches for suede on the luxury consignment site have surged 151 percent year over year. “A great suede coat is a timeless statement piece that can really stand on its own in an outfit. For a western-inspired look, try pairing it with classic blue jeans and moto boots. Or, channel an English-Countryside vibe with a floral dress for a romantic contrast. If you’re in the mood for something sleek, go full cool-girl with tailored trousers, chic sunnies, and a flat shoe.”

Craving even more inspiration? Ahead, we spoke with fashion experts and pulled a few of our own favorite styles to bring you the 10 best suede (and faux suede) coats to add to your rotation. Scroll down to see the full list, plus pro styling tips.

Best Suede Trench Coat

Alexa Chung for Madewell Double-Breasted Blazer Overcoat

Double-Breasted Blazer Overcoat

Pros

  • Real suede
  • Expert-approved

Cons

  • Some say it runs large

Alexa Chung is arguably the OG It-girl—and a big reason why suede coats are currently at the top of fashion editors’ wishlists. As part of her second collaboration with Madewell, the style icon recently dropped the chicest suede trench coat you’re bound to see everywhere this season. “I own the Alexa Chung for Madewell Double-Breasted Blazer Overcoat in Suede, and it’s become my wear-with-everything piece,” says Bella Gerard, Rakuten’s Shopping and Trend Advisor. “I usually gravitate towards shorter, chunkier suede outerwear, so a longline trench style felt really unique to me.” Sizes are naturally selling out fast, so snag yours while you still can.

Customer review: “The minute I saw this I knew I needed it. Once I opened the packaged and felt the quality and weighty-ness of the fabric, I knew I was getting what I paid for. I cannot wait to style this and wear it out!”

Best Suede Trench Coat Under $200

Anthropologie Faux-Suede Trench Coat

Faux-Suede Trench Coat

Pros

  • Machine-washable
  • Affordable

Cons

  • Shape can be a bit boxy for some

Love the look of the Madewell trench but want something a little more wallet-friendly? Gerard recommends this faux suede style from Anthropologie that you can snag for under $200. Not only is it machine-washable for easy maintenance, but it also has shoulder pads for a little extra oomph.

Sizes: XXS–XL

Material: Polyester

Customer review: “I ordered this in an XS and it definitely runs large, but I love this because I can layer underneath. The coat is heavy and has shoulder pads. I personally like the shoulder pads as they actually improve the look of my shoulders, and it’s nice padding for when I wear crossbody bags. The outer material is super soft and the color is gorgeous! This was definitely worth it as I have been eyeing this for a while now!”

What to Look for in the Best Suede Coats

“When it comes to shopping for suede coats—or outerwear in general—I’m all about quality,” says Comroe. “Outerwear is a great investment, and a well-made suede coat will last season after season. I always check fabric composition, looking specifically for 100 percent suede, lambskin, or leather. While this often comes with a higher price tag, I believe it’s worth it in the long run.” Natural fibers do tend to be more durable and insulating than synthetic alternatives, however if you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, there are still plenty of quality faux suede coats available.

Factors like the structure and shape of the coat as well as the weight of its material can also impact its longevity. “Suede can stretch over time, so look for a coat with a strong lining to help it maintain its shape,” recommends Gerard.

Real or synthetic, keep in mind suede finishes are generally prone to staining, so “be sure to factor in the price of any potential maintenance your garment might require down the line,” Gerard adds. “Consider where, when, and how often you’ll be reaching for this coat—whether for the office, date nights, or casual outing. You might benefit more from a faux-suede piece instead of investing in the real thing.”

How to Style Suede Coats

“Suede is a unique material in that it can either lean tough and outdoorsy, or cozy and soft,” says Gerard. “This versatility is part of what makes it such a great option for outerwear, as how you accessorize will really determine the vibe. For a cooler look, opt for chunky boots or loafers, and lean into hardware when it comes to handbags and belts. To go more cozy, layer up with a chunky scarf or knit hat.”

“Since suede outerwear tends to be on the thicker side, I recommend skipping the heavy knits and pairing your larger coat with a more fitted top,” she adds. “It offers a timeless look that still makes a statement and can easily be dressed up or down.”

How to Care for Suede Coats

“Whether it’s shoes, a purse, or a coat, the easiest way to keep your suede looking its best is to prep the item before you wear it,” advises Gerard. “I like using the Jason Markk Repel Premium Stain & Water Repellent Spray, which creates a barrier between your piece and potential stains. Just mist, wait 24 hours for everything to dry, and you’re set.”

“I never wear anything suede until I’ve treated it with a high-quality protector spray,” agrees Comroe. “Since the coating wears off over time, I make it a habit to reapply annually. While some people like to use a suede brush for regular upkeep, I prefer to bring my suede pieces to a professional once a year for a little spa day to keep them looking their best.”
