Blow-drying, straightening, curling... If any of these words are in your hair styling vocabulary, then you definitely need to make heat protection sprays part of that routine.

'Thermal damage - which is the use of any heat on the hair - is one of the leading causes of degradation of the hair fibre,' says hairstylist, Tom Smith. 'Heat protectors provide a buffer between your hair and the hot surface or air flow minimising the amount of damage that can occur.'

Initial heat damage can cause the hair to look dull and feel dry. As the cuticle of the hair strands lift, lipids are lost from the hair core which can eventually lead to split ends and breakage. A spritz of heat protector will help to slow down these effects.

How To Find The Best Heat Protection Spray For Your Hair

All hair types will benefit from a heat protector, and the right formula will do the job without weighing down your hair or leaving it sticky or crunchy. Lightweight mists will work best on finer strands while coarse or curly hair will appreciate the added moisture found in cream or milky textures.

Smith is a fan of water-like formulas as 'you can use them liberally without fear of weighing the hair down and therefore get the maximum possible heat protection.' Gently comb through damp hair before applying your heat protector to ensure even coverage. 'If you use a lot of heat, first apply before blow-drying. Then, reapply and let it dry before using direct heat so you get the most protection,' says Smith, who stresses that you should never use straighteners or curling tongs on damp hair (even with heat protection on).

How We Test The Best Heat Protection Sprays

Different hair types will require different forms of heat protection. While a mist might do the job for fine, straight hair types, someone with thick, curly hair might get on better with a nourishing cream or oil. That's why it's important to us to test a range of heat protection products on a range of hair types and see how they perform.

Can it be used on damp and dry hair? Does it restore shine to dry, lacklustre lengths? Will it provide long-lasting hold to your style? Does it leave a sticky residue in the hair? Our list of requirements goes on... So, just know that our standards are high when it comes to finding and recommending the best heat protection out there.
