What Does Retinol Eye Cream Do?
'The skin around the eyes is under constant stress, due to facial expressions, squinting and blinking,' says Medik8’s Chief Product Officer and Founding Partner Daniel Issacs. 'This leads to the eye area being more susceptible to wrinkles, making it the perfect place to apply vitamin A (aka retinol), although of course you do need to be more cautious.'
The benefits of using retinol can be split into three categories: fine lines, texture and tone. 'For wrinkles and lines, retinol stimulates collagen production, which can help reduce their appearance. For texture, it promotes cell turnover, leading to smoother skin. For tone, retinol can help fade pigmentation and even out skin tone, reducing dark circles caused by hyperpigmentation,' explains Issacs.
Can I Use Retinol For My Under Eyes?
While retinol does have ample benefits for the under-eye area, make sure to proceed with caution. The skin around your socket is thin and delicate, meaning sensitivity is a risk.
So, how to use retinol around your eyes without inducing irritation? 'It’s best to start your vitamin A journey on a low strength of retinoid and work up gradually to keep maximising your results,' says Isaacs. 'This ensures skin isn’t overwhelmed by a new active.'
It's also important to only apply retinol products specifically designed for use around the eye, as these will have been sensitively formulated to take care of the delicate skin.
In terms of how often you should use your product, there isn't a hard rule. 'There is no one-size fits all when it comes to skincare, so users should always follow the guidelines but also be mindful of their own skin type and sensitivity,' says Isaacs.
'It’s important to always check the recommended usage of the product you are using – if sensitivity occurs, you may prefer to use every other night,' adds medical aesthetic doctor Sophie Shotter. 'Sensitive skins may find retinol irritating at first, but you can build up your tolerance to it over time. Introduce it slowly by using small doses three times a week and build up to using it more frequently. You can also look for a time-released retinol formula such as Murad’s Retinal Resculpt Overnight Eye Lift.'
It's also worth noting that many brands are now claiming their retinol products can be used during the day. While this may be true in some cases, it's also proven that most retinoids degrade in sunlight, meaning you'll get more bang for your buck if you stick to nightly use. What's more, as retinoids increase your skin's sensitivity to the sun, we don't really think it's worth the risk.
When Should Start You Using Retinol Eye Cream?
'You can start using eye products at any age; however you will likely get the most benefits from active eye care at age 35+ when you might start noticing fine lines and crow’s feet around the eye area,' advises Isaacs.
Note: it can take anywhere from 4 to 12 weeks to start seeing results from a retinol product, so consistency is key, no matter what age you start. And of course, remember to always wear an SPF during the day.
