Met Gala 2022: Getting Ready With 'Eternals' Star Gemma Chan

In keeping with Louis Vuitton’s commitment towards circular creativity and the personal conviction of Nicolas Ghesquière, Artistic Director of Women’s Collections, ambassadors and friends of the house were asked to choose from an archival or previously worn look, with a twist for the Met Gala 2022.

'I chose a cape from the archives - a LV Cruise 20 collection piece inspired by New York City and a gown from the SS22 runway show,' Chan tells ELLE UK. '

'The beading and embroidery on the cape and dress are exquisite and represent hours of work by artisans of the Maison. It's exquisite craftmanship.'

Chan wore a black sandal from the Louis Vuitton collection. Speaking about the whole look, Chan tells us: 'I felt so honoured to be wearing this look, combining pieces from two different collections. Nicolas’ designs are so beautiful and timeless. It’s important that we reuse, re-wear, buy less and buy better!'

Nail artist Betina Goldstein, who also worked with Shawn Mendes, Emma Chamberlain and Lily James on the night, created Chan's chrome nails with chain detailing to complement the look.

'Gemma’s MET Gala dress this year was extremely dramatic, so we wanted nails that complemented her look. We went with a black base with a silver chrome for a high impact finish – adorned with a simplistic yet glamorous hand chain to top off the look,' Goldstein told nail brand CND, which provided the varnish for the evening.

'I wore Louis Vuitton fine jewellery with emeralds and diamonds which perfectly completed the look,' Chan says. The set included diamond loop earrings and two chunky rings.

Hairstylist Owen Gould, who also worked with actor Rachel Brosnahan on the night and has previously collaborated with the likes of Kirsten Dunst and Anna Taylor-Joy, created an effortless sleek wet wave in Gemma’s hair.

Make-up artist Daniel Martin used L’Oréal Paris to create a bronze metallic eye with gunmetal stone detail.

Gemma posed in the bathroom to check out her team's final touches before hitting the red carpet.

'My favourite aspect of the look is the drama of the pannier skirt of the dress. It was actually very comfortable - I just had to remember to turn sideways when walking through doorways!' she tells us after the event.
