Cynthia Nixon has just revealed one her first political pledges since announcing her run for governor - and she has not held back.

Last month, the New York native revealed that she was attempting to knock Governor Cuomo from his seat.

In her announcement video, the mother and actress made allusions to her plans once in office, including public school funding, and attempts to fix the subway system.

Now, in a new (mesmeric) video, the Sex and the City star has made explicit that she supports attempts to legalise marijuana.

Whilst this in and of itself may not appear revolutionary, since eight states in the US have already made the move, it is Nixon’s discussion of how racism informs her decision that is being applauded by many.

In the clip Nixon boldly states,'We have to stop putting people of colour in jail for something that white people do with impunity,' and concludes, 'This simple truth is: for white people the use of marijuana has effectively been legal for a long time. Isn’t it time we legalise it for everybody else?'

Thousands of people on Twitter have come forward in support and praise of the activist’s announcement, which recognises how the illegal status of weed disproportionately affects ethnic minorities.

Some people, however, disagree with Nixon’s message, urging her to not bring race into the conversation.

We suppose we will have to see whether Nixon's message strikes a chord with the voting New York public.
