What will the plot of Only Murders In The Building season 5 be?
As season four of Only Murders In The Building came to a close, viewers saw Mabel, Charles and Oliver confronted by the building's doorman, Lester, who had blood all over him - pointing to him being season five's central murder victim.
As well as this, Sofia Caccimelio (Téa Leoni), a new character on the show, asked the Arconia trio to look into her husband's mysterious disappearance.
While speaking to Variety, Only Murder's In The Building showrunner John Hoffman gave the publication some insight how season five will be lined up.
'I know the killer. I know the story. We are now breaking the fourth episode of season 5, so we have a pretty good handle on it all. There is always a wish to look into a new world, and hopefully with a real New York bent. The show has always been about classic-meets-modern,' he said.
'Season 5 is shaping up within the microcosm of our building in New York, and modernisation, and grappling with that,' showrunner Hoffman told Variety. 'The victim was a doorman, and that is a very rich lineage and heritage to New York City - what that job is, and the union around that job - and there's a level of respect involved. Now we have to pay respect by finding out what exactly might have happened to Lester. The old-school nature of all of that piety that still find in New York, matched up with sort of the modern.'
As per Hulu's logline, the premise is as follows: 'After Lester dies under suspicious circumstances, Charles, Oliver, and Mabel refuse to believe it was an accident. Their investigation plunges them into the shadowy corners of New York and beyond — where the trio uncovers a dangerous web of secrets connecting powerful billionaires, old-school mobsters, and the mysterious residents of the Arconia. The trio discovers a deeper divide between their storied city they thought they knew and the new New York evolving around them — one where the old mob fights to hold on as newer, even more dangerous players emerge.'
Hoffman also detailed more of Sofia's character and what she will bring to the new season.
'I think she's the great tease at the end of the finale and a little bit of an intriguing bump forward. She's an extension of the little news report in Episode nine that Mabel makes note of at the hospital. [Sofia] is the wife of the Dry-Cleaning King of Brooklyn, and maybe a couple of dry cleaning outlets in Manhattan, as well, we may come to know.
'But beyond that, it's a world opened up potentially that we haven't talked about too much yet in New York, so she holds a lot of intrigue.'
Besides this, it is also thought that we will see more of the main characters' personal lives: the continued aftermath of Charles losing Sazz; Oliver and his love of directing plays; and what Mabel will decide to do with her life.
Who will make up the cast of Only Murders In The Building season 5?
As per usual, the series' main trio Mabel, Charles and Oliver will be back in the fifth season of Only Murders In The Building to solve the mystery behind Lester's death and deal with the intricacies of their personal lives.
As confirmed by Hoffman, Sofia will be making a return to upcoming series to find out what happened to her husband.
Another character that will most likely make their return to the show is Loretta Durkin, who is portrayed by Meryl Streep.
As for new cast members, the first major addition to season five was Keegan-Michael Key, who is set to play a recurring role, however, the details surrounding his character have not yet been revealed.
Recently, it was announced that two-time Oscar winnier actor Christoph Waltz is set to join the cast for the fifth season of Only Murders In The Building, in a recurring role. Besides this, not much is known about the specifics of Waltz's role, who he will play and how many episodes he will appear in, as this is still being kept under wraps.
More newcomers are set to join the fifth season including Bobby Cannavale, Beanie Eeldstein, Jermaine Fowler, Dianne Wiest and Renée Zellweger, whose characters are also unknown.
